Two police officers were fatally shot and a sheriff’s deputy was wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance call in northern Utah on Sunday, the authorities said. A suspect has been taken into custody.
The officers “took fire” upon arrival at the home at just after 9 p.m. local time Sunday in Tremonton, Utah, the Brigham City Police Department said in a statement shared on social media on Monday.
An officer from the Tremonton Garland Police Department who responded to the call was speaking with a person at the residence when a man came out and opened fire, “striking and killing the officer,” the statement said.
The man then shot a second Tremonton Garland officer, who was “struck and killed,” it said.
The man fired several rounds into the vehicle of a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s office who had also responded to the scene, injuring him and his police dog. They were in fair condition, the police said.
Bystanders persuaded the shooter to put down his weapon, the police statement said. He was charged with aggravated murder and was being held at the Box Elder County Jail, the statement said.
