Upcoming Cubs-Brewers Series Could Decide NL Central Winner

The Milwaukee Brewers have taken MLB by storm since the All-Star break.

Multiple winning streaks of 10-plus games have catapulted the Brewers to first place in the National League Central and have given them the best record in MLB.

Monday, Milwaukee will begin its most important series of the season against the Chicago Cubs and the series could reveal the clear winner in the NL Central.

The Brewers entered Monday with a commanding eight-game lead over the Cubs in the division. Chicago will have a chance, though, to trim into that lead this week.

The two teams begin a five-game series at Wrigley Field beginning Monday. It will be the final time this season the two sides play each other.

Not only is the series important for division purposes, but the winner of the series will also be the winner of the season series which could eventually be a tiebreaker at the end of the year.

For the Brewers, dropping two or three games in the series wouldn’t be a major ordeal. Their current lead in the division gives them a bit of leeway to slip up and lose a few games.

Chicago on the other hand, is in a must-win situation if it has any hopes of winning the NL Central for the first time since 2020.

Today is the first day the Cubs have gained ground on the Brewers since July 30.They were a game out of first place then. They fell to 9 out before today. Hard to pick up ground when the team you’re chasing never loses…unless you sweep a lot of doubleheaders!

A day-night doubleheader Monday will set the tone for the entire series. Milwaukee will have its ace, Freddy Peralta on the mound in Game 1. Chicago will counter with its Rookie of the Year contender Cade Horton.

Horton has a 0.32 ERA since the All-Star break, and he is the exact pitcher the Cubs would want on the mound to try and get a series-opening win.

A series win for the Brewers would all but guarantee a third straight NL Central title barring an improbable September collapse.
