Weather Authority Impact days to start the week; dangerous heat

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It will be an extremely hot and humid start to the week for the Tennessee Valley.

A Weather Authority Impact Day has been issued for both Monday and Tuesday this week because of the threat of dangerous heat and humidity. Air temperatures are forecast to range from the low to mid and upper 90s.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Heat Advisory from 10 a.m. Monday until 8 p.m., Tuesday, because of the high heat index expected. Counties included in the advisory are Colbert, Cullman, Franklin (AL), Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lincoln, Madison, and Morgan counties.

Along with the hot air mass in place, dew points are forecast to rise into the low to mid 70s, making it feel tropical and uncomfortable across the area.

The combination of high temperatures and a tropical air mass in place will lead to dangerously high heat index values. On Monday and Tuesday, the heat index will range from 100 to 108, with the highest temperatures being in Northwest Alabama.

Where isolated showers and storms form, the temperature will be slightly cooler.

Weather Setup:

The current weather setup over the Deep South is what’s supporting the dangerous heat and humidity threat for the start of the week.

A strong upper-level ridge has hold of the United States, keeping dangerously hot and humid air in place. At the surface, an area of high pressure will be positioned to the northeast of the Tennessee Valley on Monday. The clockwise rotation around the area of high pressure will support a continuous flow of deep tropical moisture into the region.

Heat Safety:

Be sure to stay safe in the heat this week, and take actions to protect yourself from the heat. Be sure to stay hydrated, limit time spent outside, take breaks from the heat, and never leave kids or pets in hot cars.

By the end of this week, an increase in rainfall and storm coverage is expected to support a decline in temperatures. Stick with The Weather Authority for the latest on this week’s heat and storm chances!
