Tigres UANL can temporarily climb to the head of the Liga MX Apertura table on Saturday, provided it bags a home win over fellow Mexican powerhouse Club América. Guido Pizarro has established his old side as an early frontrunner for the Apertura title and will become the Liga MX leader on goal difference as long as it takes all three points on offer at the Estadio Universitario.
Los Auriazules welcome América to Nuevo Leon on the back of a thrilling 7-0 victory over Puebla, where all seven goals were scored by different members of the squad. The rout was just one goal shy of matching the Liga MX record for the biggest win in the division’s history when Pumas UNAM dominated Veracruz 8-0 back in November 2007.
América also has a spring in its step after winning last time out, though a gritty 1-0 win over Querétaro is nowhere near as impressive by comparison. Youngster Dagoberto Espinoza scored the game’s only goal after just eight minutes, and the Eagles were unfortunate not to find the back of the net again in Mexico City.
André Jardine’s side triumphed 3-0 the last time these teams met during last season’s Clausura back in March. However, Leagues Cup quarter-finalist Tigres now looks like a different animal altogether as it seeks to redeem that defeat.
