Team USA and Sweden will square off in the gold medal game of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Saturday. The annual U-18 showcase has long been a proving ground for future NHL stars, and this year’s finale delivers a classic matchup between two of the sport’s international powerhouses.

Making this matchup monumental is the fact that the United States was able to end Canada’s three-year run of reaching the gold medal game of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, doing so by winning in a shootout to qualify for the final of this prestigious event. Team USA is 3-1 in the tournament, while Sweden is 4-0. The final will take place at the Pavol Demira Ice Stadium in beautiful Trenčín, Slovakia.
Like the U.S., Sweden also had a razor-tight win in the semifinal, defeating Finland in overtime to reach this matchup with the American U-18 ice hockey team.
The U.S., despite boasting a strong team, hadn’t played in the final of this event since 2016. Even worse, the Americans haven’t won a gold medal in this tournament since 2003, making Sunday’s game huge for Team USA. Sweden, likewise, hasn’t won this tournament in quite some time, last winning gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament in 2007. It hasn’t played in the championship game since 2022, either, setting up a huge matchup between two countries hungry for a monumental win on Saturday.
Team USA nearly blew its opportunity to reach the gold medal game in its matchup against Canada. The United States had a two-goal third-period lead before heading into overtime. The goal scorers for the Americans in the win over Canada were Luke Puchner, Blake Zielinski, and Noah Davidson.
Sweden defeated Finland 6-5 in the semifinal, meanwhile, in large part thanks to a hat trick scored by Marcus Nordmark. Axel Elofsson, meanwhile, scored two goals in the win for Sweden.
