Like many parents, Mya McDonald was so excited about her daughter’s first day back at school, until discovering what her 7-year-old did that morning to make it memorable for all the wrong reasons.

As the summer holidays drew to a close, McDonald and her daughter, Shemaiah, 7, had spoken at length about the new school term that lies ahead. Shemaiah was so excited to be back with all her friends and to pick up where she left off at the end of last year.

McDonald, of Miami, Florida, told Newsweek that her daughter had “talked about it all summer,” and Shemaiah could barely contain her happiness when the first day of school finally arrived. As it turned out, she felt the need to give herself a whole new hairdo that same morning to mark the occasion—much to her mom’s surprise.

“That morning, she woke up and chose to cut her hair,” McDonald said. “Apparently, she didn’t want the hair in her face, so the scissors were the easy way out.”

Rather than sticking with the two ponytail bunches her mom had previously done for her, Shemaiah chose to simply cut a whole one off instead. Evidently, that just wasn’t the aesthetic she wanted.

McDonald said that she still doesn’t know entirely why her daughter made such a drastic decision before her first day back, but it made the momentous day even more eventful.

“I laughed, she cried, then we hugged it out, and she promised to never do it again,” McDonald said. “She’s very adventurous, and I’m sure she may do more crazy things in the future, but this was a memory to laugh at for years to come.”

McDonald couldn’t resist capturing a video of her daughter’s mischief and shared it on TikTok (@myasweetness). The caption alongside the clip jokes, “have kids they said.”

The 7-year-old’s impulsive decision left internet users in stitches, and the clip went viral with more than 1.9 million views and over 92,000 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

McDonald had to use extreme gel and a hard brush to create two new ponytails with what was left of her daughter’s hair. Thankfully, Shemaiah was happy with the finished look, and they managed to avert a major hair disaster.

In just a matter of days, the viral TikTok video has generated over 400 comments as internet users lauded the 7-year-old’s attempt to be her own hairdresser. Indeed, other parents also took to the comments to share their own similar experience, if only to make McDonald feel better.

One comment on the post reads: “Well, in her defense, she wanted to be sure the hair is well knotted.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “I was so mad thinking someone at school cut her hair until I realized.”

A third person replied: “Omg [oh my God]. I am sorry, totally uncalled-for to burst out laughing, you caught me off guard.”

One commenter added: “Mine gave herself a mullet just before reception.”
