SPOILERS: This post contains details about Weapons, now in theaters

As her latest role has fans talking and a potential prequel brewing, Amy Madigan is keeping the secrets of Aunt Gladys under her wig for now.

The Oscar nominee, who plays the eerily sinister aunt in Weapons, recently discussed the character’s mysterious origins after writer/director Zach Cregger gave some insight into how they approached her portrayal of Gladys.

“I used a lot of different bits of information, but I wouldn’t say it’s one or the other,” Madigan noted to Entertainment Weekly. “I think it’s a combination of a lot of things. People ask that question, ‘Is she real or is it this or that?’ I said, ‘Good, you guys figure it out ’cause I can’t answer that.’”

Cregger previously told Vanity Fair that he “presented Amy with two options of her origin story,” one being a regular person practicing magic to heal herself from a critical illness, the other being a non-human entity mimicking human behavior.

“I don’t know the answer, but I love that I don’t know the answer. I don’t need to know the answer. I just need to know that it’s all possible,” explained Cregger. “I don’t know which one she picked.”

After Deadline confirmed that New Line is in early talks for a prequel to Weapons, for which Cregger is not yet confirmed to return, Madigan addressed the possibility of reprising her role. Although plot details are under wraps, the origin of Aunt Gladys is ripe for exploration.

“It’s not that I discount it, but in this business, nothing’s real till it’s real,” she told EW. “I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his. That’s really the gift of how the movie came out. The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I’ll leave it at that.”

In Weapons, all but one child in Justine Gandy’s (Julia Garner) third-grade class goes missing when they each mysteriously wake up and run off into the night at exactly 2:17am. The truth of what happened to the kids unravels through the perspectives of multiple characters, portrayed by Josh Brolin, Austin Abrams, Cary Cristopher and Benedict Wong.
