Spike Lee’s back on home turf.

‘Highest 2 Lowest’

Denzel Washington stars as David, a rich and powerful music producer who spirals when his son is kidnapped, in the latest from Spike Lee.

From our review:

It isn’t so much David’s success that stirs up trouble. Rather, it is his isolation from the city that he rediscovers once he hits its streets and this procedural turns into an exhilarating celebration of a place and a people — enter Eddie Palmieri, Rosie Perez, Anthony Ramos and ASAP Rocky — and a Spike Lee tribute becomes an exultant Spike Lee joint.

A gleefully grisly action sequel.

‘Nobody 2’

In this sequel directed by Timo Tjahjanto, Bob Odenkirk returns as a family man who packs a mean punch.

From our review:

The fight sequences here are well-staged, shot and cut, more elaborate than in the earlier movie and at times gleefully grisly, with skewered and barbecued flesh. I didn’t especially appreciate the most sanguineous sections, though only because I sometimes shut my eyes when all I wanted to do was watch Odenkirk’s glorious, exceedingly relatable farmisht countenance.

A skillful neo-western.
