SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — The Scottsboro Police Department says retired Police Chief Ralph Dawe has died.

“Our department and community are deeply saddened by this loss,” the department said on its Facebook page.

The department said Dawe began his career in Scottsboro in March 1989 as a patrol officer. After showing a talent for investigations, Dawe spent time in the detective division as a sergeant, lieutenant and then a captain.

According to Scottsboro police, Dawe was then promoted to major in 2002, making him responsible for all 71 employees in the department. He was appointed chief in 2006, a position he held until he retired in 2020.

“As Chief, he was a forward-looking and decisive leader,” the department said. “He championed modernization, advancing technology, equipment, and training to ensure the department was prepared for the challenges of the future. His leadership strengthened our capabilities, enhanced officer safety, and elevated the level of service we provide to our community.”

The department said Dawe received numerous commendations over the course of his career and worked several high-profile homicide and robbery cases.

“The Scottsboro Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Chief Dawe’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him. His vision, leadership, and dedication will remain an enduring part of this department’s history,” the department said.
