Collin Morikawa Details ‘Misconception’ People Have About Professional Golf

Despite his young age, Collin Morikawa has already achieved considerable success in professional golf. With two major championships and five additional victories in just six years, his perspective on golfing glory is one worth listening to.

However, like most of his peers, the Los Angeles native has also endured difficult times, where his game has fallen far short of its potential. On the subject, Morikawa stated that people probably don’t realize how difficult it is for a professional golfer to be satisfied with their level.

“It takes a toll out of you,” he told US Weekly during an exclusive interview. “I don’t think people realize the stress it puts on our bodies that we go through every single day. We are trying to perfect this game, essentially, that we can’t perfect. We can’t go 4-for-4 with five RBIs and two home runs. No one is going to have 18 birdies in a round. There’s always going to be struggles that you have to maintain and balance. That’s a big part that I think people have a misconception about.”

Morikawa added that the moments of slump are precisely when golf becomes more prevalent in a player’s thoughts.

“Golf is a big part of my life and who I am,” he said. “When it’s going great, it’s very easy to be able to separate yourself. But when it’s not going as well, your mind is constantly thinking about golf. ‘How do I keep getting better?’ Because that’s the chase. That’s what we’re all trying to accomplish: getting better every single day. ‘How do we keep improving? What do I need to do in order to give myself a chance to win on Sunday?’ It’s just a never-ending cycle.”

Morikawa began his professional career in 2019. Between July of that year and October of 2023, he won six times on the PGA Tour, including two major championships. He also won the 2021 DP World Tour Championship.

He has currently spent nearly two years out of the PGA Tour winner’s circle, although calling this period a dip in his performance might not be an accurate reflection of it.

In 39 tournaments played over the past two seasons, Morikawa has finished in 12 top-10s, including four second places. He missed only five cuts and earned more than $15 million.

He’s currently playing in the BMW Championship, where he arrived ranked 17th in the FedEx Cup and sixth in the world. He’s almost sure to be at the Tour Championship next week and the Ryder Cup in September.
