Against the San Diego Padres, the broadcast caught a glimpse of the Boston Red Sox looking at pictures of Padres closer Robert Suarez on a tablet in the dugout.
It was an attempt to catch him tipping, but it was perfectly legal. Everything on the tablets, issued by MLB, has to go through the league. However, it has sparked discourse about what teams should and should not do to gain an advantage.
Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal called out the Red Sox as a team that may be taking things too far to catch pitchers tipping. On “Foul Territory,” he called out the Red Sox’s base coaches for leaving their box to go up the line “to see things you shouldn’t be able to see while playing the game of baseball.”
Skubal did note that he has no problem with teams staying within the rules to catch pitch tips. However, he clearly has a problem with something the Red Sox have done. Alex Cora responded to the criticism on WEEI.
“We haven’t played them in a while,” Cora said on WEEI. “Well, their third base coach doesn’t stand in (the box) either. He’s my brother. You prepare, and that’s the way it works in the big leagues. Everybody’s working and everybody’s trying to get an edge.”
Cora was infamously part of the 2017 Houston Astros team that was accused of stealing signs illegally and relaying them to hitters from the dugout. However, he assured that this was nothing like that situation. Cora reiterated that everything on the tablets is legal.
