EXCLUSIVE: Munya Chawawa and Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran have been cast in Schooled, the Channel 4 comedy inspired by creator Delia-René Donaldson’s experience in pastoral care at a London academy.

Chawawa is playing ‘T’ alongside lead Shiloh Coke (Cheaters), who stars as Kayleigh Clarke – a newly appointed Head of Year 10 with no formal teaching background and very little patience for unruly teens. The pair are joined by Judi Love (Taskmaster), Michelle de Swarte (Spent) and Chandran, who play Anita, Naomi and Lara respectively. Rebecca Humphries (The Crown), Alex Bhat (Gentleman Jack) and Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Black Mirror) are also aboard.

Landing Chawawa and Chandran is a coup. Chawawa is a YouTube star who has been working with Channel 4 more of late and is about to deliver the Edinburgh TV Festival Alternative MacTaggart lecture. Chandran broke out opposite Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley playing Edwina Sharma in Netflix’s highly-rated second season of Bridgerton.

Filming is now underway on Schooled. Described as a “comedic love letter to teachers across the UK,” the series follows Clarke, who, despite the lack of resources, overworked staff and relentless students, is determined to turn her lack of credentials into a strength as she forms unexpected bonds and discovers that sometimes empathy is the best tool for survival.

BAFTA-winning producer Afolabi Kuti is EPing Schooled via his Broedmachine outfit alongside Group M Motion Entertainment. The writing team includes Yemi Oyefuwa (Smothered, Dreaming Whilst Black), Tyrell Williams (Time Bandits, Hoodocumentary) and script editor Jeremy Dyson (We Are Lady Parts, The Curse, Bad Education).

Kuti said: “We’re thrilled to be working with such a wildly funny and immensely talented cast. The magic they’ve created together is a pure joy to watch. It’s all testament to Delia’s brilliant writing and the extraordinary team effort that went into casting.”

Chandran is repped at JAG in the UK and Gersh in the U.S., as well as Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.
