Yankees Shocker? MLB Insider Floats All-Star Hurler As Waiver Candidate

The New York Yankees were one of the best teams in the league a few weeks ago, but they’ve completely fallen off a cliff over the last two weeks. A lot of the blame has been placed on the duo of manager Aaron Boone and closer Devin Williams.

After being one of the best pitchers in baseball for five years, Williams has been horrendous for the Yankees. He’s been so bad this year that the Yankees could consider making a big move.

FanSided’s Robert Murray recently suggested the Yankees could place Williams on waivers, though he noted it was speculation at this point.

“Williams has been a disaster of epic proportions in the Bronx and seems very likely to be a one-and-done,” Murray wrote. “He was acquired to be a dominant, difference-making presence in the ninth inning. Instead, he’s recorded a 5.60 ERA and been in and out of the closer role.

“A change of scenery is definitely needed in the offseason, and considering his struggles and the number of high-end relievers on the roster, I wonder if the Yanks could consider putting Williams on waivers. Again, just my speculation. It’s not something I’ve heard. But his stint in the Bronx has been so bad that I wonder if it’s a possibility they could consider.”

While this idea is circulating around the league right now, it wouldn’t make sense for the Yankees.

The righty hasn’t been good enough to be the Yankees’ closer, but Boone is already showing the willingness to use Williams in lower-leverage situations.

Rather than place him on waivers, the Yankees could use him as the best low-leverage reliever in the game. This makes a lot more sense, plus it leaves the door open for a reunion in the offseason if the two sides feel like they make sense as a match.
