The city has opened its first We Are LA casework office in the Crenshaw District to help residents at risk of eviction stay in their homes.

The office, operated by the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles, offers one-on-one assistance to tenants facing legal or financial challenges that could lead to homelessness. Caseworkers help with tasks such as filing court responses to eviction notices, applying for public benefits, navigating legal aid and overcoming language or technology barriers.

The expansion is part of Bass’ focus on preventing homelessness, which city officials say has contributed to a second year of declining numbers of unhoused residents. Since the We Are LA program launched two years ago, more than 105,000 people have received help connecting to benefits and legal services, according to a Loyola Marymount University study.

“Preventing people from falling into homelessness is key to our efforts in addressing this humanitarian crisis,” Bass said in a statement. “Results show that this program is working, and with a second consecutive decline in homelessness for the first time in recent history, we must continue this momentum.

The office has served over 1,000 residents since it opened in June.

Residents can access services at the Crenshaw office, through the city’s FamilySource Centers or by calling the We Are LA hotline at 213-584-1808.
