Mockery as Trump’s ‘desperation bribe’ bombs with Americans: ‘Absolutely washed’

A new Reuters/Ipsos survey revealed that Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to President Donald Trump’s promise to issue $5,000 checks to all U.S. citizens, a revelation that shocked countless critics.

“Even his desperation bribe lie didn’t work. Zero juice,” wrote progressive activist and podcaster Jordan Uhl Tuesday in a social media post on X to his more than 243,000 followers. “Absolutely f—— washed.”

The poll saw Ipsos survey 1,143 “general population adults” between Sept. 11-14 using a “nationally representative probability sample,” and found that a staggering 63% believed Trump’s $5,000 promise was “inappropriate,” and just 17% said it was appropriate. Nearly a fifth of those surveyed indicated they were unsure.

“Americans are finally saying f— you to this demented criminal con artist,” wrote Patrick Strother, a Minnesota-based marketing executive and former instructor at the University of Minnesota.

Trump first made the promise last week during his speech at the RNC midterm convention in Dallas, vowing to issue $5,000 checks to every American citizen if Republicans maintain their congressional majority after the midterms. However, countless critics noted that Trump had floated issuing checks in the past that ultimately never materialized, including $5,000 DOGE checks and $2,000 tariff rebate checks.

Trump’s pledge has also been scrutinized for potentially running afoul of federal law, as well as for its impact on the U.S. national debt, which eclipsed $40 trillion last month.

According to the poll, 89% of Democrats, 61% of independents and 37% of Republicans found Trump’s $5,000 promise to be inappropriate. Only 6% of Democrats, 14% of independents and 33% of Republicans found the promise to be appropriate.

“Trump’s popularity has been trending down in a big way since he launched the war against Iran in late Feb,” wrote prominent online commentator and investor Mario Nawfal in a social media post on X to his nearly 4 million followers.

“These midterms will determine whether he will have control of his agenda in his final 2 years in office… And right now, it isn’t looking like he will.”
