Police are investigating two break-ins reported less than an hour apart in the San Fernando Valley overnight.
A resident in the 17000 block of Murphy Lane in Northridge reported a burglary around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Los Angeles police officers responding to the call found a smashed window but did not locate any suspects, freelance media firm KNN News reported from the scene.
Police have not yet confirmed if anything was taken from the residence. The resident was believed to be inside the home at the time of the incident.
About 30 minutes earlier and only 3 miles away, a possible break-in was reported on the 9000 block of Vanalden Avenue.
Police noticed a broken glass door leading to the condominium, but it was unclear what, if anything, was taken in that incident, either.
Police are searching for witnesses or surveillance video to help identify and locate any suspects.
The calls come amid a series of break-ins across the San Fernando Valley that have drawn the attention of law enforcement.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said during an interview on KTLA last week that burglars are becoming more sophisticated, with groups conducting pre-incident surveillance by placing cameras near homes and tracking residents’ schedules to determine when properties are empty.
“That’s a problem we see throughout Southern California, we’re working with the task force that includes our partners at the Sheriff’s Department and other agencies in the region to be able to share intelligence … and we’ve had some good luck taking people into custody,” McDonnell said.
While some arrests have been made, McDonnell urged residents to stay vigilant and take steps to protect their homes, including building relationships with neighbors, which he said may be the most important.
