REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Officials at Redstone Arsenal say the installation has activated safety protocols after an unexploded mortar shell was found by a construction crew Tuesday morning.
According to Team Redstone, around 8 a.m. Tuesday, construction workers near building 6272, DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center’s Software, Simulation, Systems Engineering and Integration Directorate (DEVCOM AvMC S3I), found an unexploded 4.2mm white phosphorus mortar round while digging near a sidewalk.
The Arsenal said the round does not pose an immediate threat to the installation, but a safety perimeter has been established and is being monitored by Garrison safety personnel.
“Given Redstone’s history as a World War II-era arsenal, we are prepared for the occasional discovery of unexploded ordnance and have established protocols to address these incidents safely,” Officials said.
Redstone said that an explosive ordnance disposal unit from Fort Benning, Georgia, was called in and expected to arrive at the Arsenal around 2 p.m.
“The team will assess the situation and prepare for removal, transportation and detonation,” officials said. “DEVCOM AvMC have cleared all the occupants of the S3I complex to ensure the safety of the workforce before the EOD team arrives.”
Redstone said that all other installation activities are continuing as normal.
