Everything seems to indicate that the personal matters that led Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, to suddenly leave for home last weekend have taken longer than initially thought.Scott will not be back for the BMW Championship, and Scheffler will have a new bagman carrying his bag.

The news was posted on the official PGA Tour website. Not only was Scott’s absence announced, but the World No. 1 will have Mike Cromie, a seasoned caddie who regularly works with Chris Kirk.

Cromie was released after the FedEx St. Jude Championship because Kirk just missed qualifying for the BMW Championship. He ended ranked 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, ending his regular season after finishing tied for ninth in Memphis.

Kirk and Cromie have been working together since 2020, during which time the player has won two tournaments, the 2023 Honda Classic and The Sentry in 2024. Cromie is also a good player, and even played college golf for the University of Georgia.

Scott was with Scheffler in Memphis for the first three rounds, but had to travel home suddenly due to a personal matter. The world No. 1 had to call on his friend Brad Payne, who is also the PGA Tour chaplain, to help him during the final round.

There is no information yet on how long Scott will be away. Nor is there any information on whether Cromie will remain his backup should he also need to miss the TOUR Championship.

Scott is one of the most respected caddies on the PGA Tour. He has been at Scheffler’s side for each of his 17 victories on tour, including four major championships, and he previously helped Bubba Watson win two green jackets.

Scheffler has a commanding lead in the FedEx Cup standings and is the overwhelming favorite to win the BMW Championship. The Ridgewood, New Jersey, native has finished in the top 10 in 14 of his 17 tournaments this season, including four wins.

Twelve of those top 10 finishes have come consecutively, a streak he’ll look to maintain this week in Maryland.
