Ahead of the 2025 season, the Dallas Cowboys remain a major talking point in the NFL for all the wrong reasons. Less than a month before their Week 1 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, they remain at odds with one of their top players.
Over the last few months, All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons has sought out a contract extension off his rookie deal. The former first-round pick has blossomed into an elite talent for Dallas and is arguably one of the top players in the league on that side of the ball.
Even with his impressive production in his first four seasons, the Cowboys haven’t been in any rush to get a deal done. This has resulted in the standoff evolving into a worst-case scenario.

During training camp, Parsons’ frustrations reached a fever pitch when he formally requested a trade. Almost two weeks later, the 26-year-old’s future in Dallas remains murky.
Adam Schefter details the latest regarding Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys
While on ESPN’s Get Up Monday morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter broke down the latest on Parsons. Following his trade request, he remains at odds with Jerry Jones and the front office.
“No deal in sight,” Schefter said. “If there’s no deal in sight what’s going to happen? Is Micah going to play in the opener? We’ve already heard Jerry Jones wonder about whether Micah would be out there on opening day.”
Schefter also dove into how this ordeal could continue to play out if the two sides remain unable to negotiate an extension.
“What would be the Cowboys’ plan here? Well, if obviously they can’t get a long-term deal done, and the two sides are not even talking about it right now, then they can always have Micah this year if he plays. And they have the franchise tag after this year. They’d have the franchise tag the next year. They have his rights, essentially, for three years. At some point in time you have to wonder if they would look to trade him.”

As bleak as things look right now, Jones has made it clear the Cowboys aren’t entertaining the idea of trading Parsons. That said, based on how things have played out thus far, it’s clear a lot of work has to be done to get the relationship even back to a professional level.
Parsons remains present with the team, but has still been limited in practice due to back tightness.
