The New York Yankees seemingly needed to add to the starting rotation at the trade deadline, but they opted against it. Instead, New York seems ready to commit to the young pitchers on the roster, as well as the fact that it returned Luis Gil from the injured list.
Now, the team could be in for a roster shake-up.
Stephen Parello of Yanks Go Yard recently urged the Yankees to send rookie Cam Schlitter to Triple-A when Ryan Yarbrough returns from the injured list.
“As impressive as the rookie has been at times, dazzling fans with his high-octane fastball, the one thing that has become clear with Cam Schlittler is that he doesn’t always have full command of his arsenal,” Parello wrote. “With a 5.03 BB/9 and a 2.29 HR/9, it’s clear that he misses his target far too often, both inside and outside of the strike zone.
“With just 25 1/3 innings pitched at Triple-A, there’s a legitimate question as to whether or not the 24-year-old would benefit from some more seasoning at the minors’ highest level while the club determines whether sticking by him or re-inserting Ryan Yarbrough into the rotation when he comes off the IL gives it the best chance to win games down the stretch.”
While Schlitter hasn’t been a Cy Young candidate, he’s been serviceable, but the Yankees are going to need to make a roster move when Yarbrough returns.
There’s a chance that Schlitter is moved to the bullpen. There’s also a chance the Yankees test out a six-man rotation in order to limit innings with Will Warren, Gil, and Schlitter.
It’s hard to tell what the Yankees will do when Yarbrough returns, but there is a growing chance that Schlitter’s role is changed depending on how he pitches the next couple of times out.
