KTLA typically has a makeup artist for the anchors on set for the Weekend Morning News; however, on Sunday, she was sick. Thus, entertainment reporter Doug Kolk needed some help.
There was no need to fear, though, as his cohort of Megan Telles, Lauren Lyster and Kacey Montoya came to the rescue, live on TV.
It all started as Doug came out for his first entertainment segment of the morning just after 6:45 a.m., makeup bag in hand, and Erin Myers was finishing up coverage of Long Beach Burger Week.
Doug told his co-anchors that, due to the station being “makeup challenged” on Sunday morning and his lack of knowledge on how to apply the right products, he began rubbing cream on his face as he thought was right to do.
Turns out, it was eye cream.
“So, I took this…” Doug said, holding the eye cream in his hand while Lauren chirped, “Oh, I like that eye cream.”
“…But I put it all over my face,” Doug continued. “It kind of burns a little bit.”
As the women laughed — and Kacey asked for some eye cream — Doug explained that he was pretty serious in his request for help, but clarified that it wasn’t because he didn’t know how to put it on; rather, he just didn’t know what was what.
It then turned into a bit of a free-for-all as Megan started applying makeup to Doug while Kacey began asking him questions about the products he had tried out on his own Sunday morning.
“Did you put powder on your face? What about blush?” Kacey asked.
“No, I don’t know what powder to use,” Doug replied. “There are like three different [types] in there…and the other thing, I don’t know what brushes to use.”
Lauren joined Megan in applying makeup to Doug’s face, claiming that some brushes may have been missing from his bag, as the questions continued to pour in — and repeated “I don’t know” answers from Doug followed.
A few moments later, they all simultaneously realized that they were still live on TV and had to get through Doug’s entertainment segment — but that didn’t stop the ladies from continuing with the beautification job on live television (or commenting on it, if you’re Kacey).
“Just dot it and dab it,” Kacey, off-camera, instructed Megan, who was using a sponge to rub concealer under Doug’s eyes. “Doug, look up so it doesn’t get in your eyes…Megan, you still have a spot on his nose that you’re missing.”
Lauren took the blush to Doug’s neck and cheeks as Megan finished with the concealer and started with the brow brush; Kacey still offered her thoughts from her chair. It was then that Doug began talking about behind-the-scenes action on the show “Severance.”
Kacey eventually took over reading for Doug, who was still being tended to by Megan. She spoke on a “Severance” mural in L.A. — a story that somehow surprised Doug, who wrote it.
After that, the verdict was in.
“Ladies, it’s amazing,” Doug beamed.
Not too bad for a five-minute makeup tutorial while live on TV!
