Crews extinguished flames at a facility holding household items and returns in the Inland Empire overnight.

Flames were first spotted in the 100 block of Club Center Drive in San Bernardino around 1 a.m. Sunday, San Bernardino County Fire stated on social media.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and assumed a defensive position and ensured the flames did not spread from one structure to another. Around an hour after crews first arrived, the fire was declared “under control,” authorities said.

A post published by S.B. Fire shortly before 9 a.m. provided more details on the firefight.

“With a large column of smoke visible from the 215 and I-10 freeways, the first engine company arrived at 1:05 a.m. and reported heavy fire conditions throughout the facility, which serves as a storage depot for general household goods,” officials explained. “Crews assumed an exterior attack and quickly balanced the call to a second alarm. Multiple ladder truck companies used hose streams from their towers as engine crews used turret-mounted streams and large hand-held hose lines.”

Popping sounds were heard coming from numerous ruptured small aerosol cans, the contents of which were not known. Thus, a hazardous materials response was started; however, it was later determined there was no risk.

The fire was declared under control at 2:55 a.m., and units remained on scene for several hours in mop-up and overhaul mode.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
