Former Pirates Manager Defends Aaron Boone Despite Yankees’ Struggles

The New York Yankees need to figure things out soon. Not just Devin Williams, but the entire team continues to struggle.

So far, manager Aaron Boone has been taking all of the heat and protecting his players. Former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton defended Boone and believes he can turn things around quickly.

“It may not be what Yankees fans want to hear or even pundits want to here, but sitting in that chair you have to protect your players,” said Shelton on a Bleacher Report podcast. “They have two months left, they haven’t played well. The last thing they need, especially in that market, is Boonie blowing up Jazz (Chisholm) or (Anthony) Volpe. … In his room, in that clubhouse with that group, they need support right now. … I respect Boonie beacause he has their back.”

While Boone surely appreciates the sentiment from Shelton, let’s not forget Shelton was fired for starting the season 12-24 with the Pirates.

Boone knows it’s not going to be an easy fix with this roster. It’s going to take time for them to get out of their slump as multiple players aren’t performing well. However, Boone also needs to stop creating self-inflicted wounds by continuing to use Devin Williams in high-leverage situations.

The Yankees have dug themselves a hole at this point in the season, and some believe it may now be too deep to escape. However, all it takes is one pitch, one at-bat or even one game to quickly turn the ship around.
