‘Counterattack’
When the Mexican drug lord Josefo Urias (Noé Hernández) tries to silence two women who discovered his cartel’s mass grave, Captain Guerrero (Luis Alberti) valiantly saves them. While Guerrero’s defiance alone is enough to anger Urias, when he learns Guerrero is partly responsible for his father’s assassination, he decides to seek revenge. Urias’s gangsters intercept Guerrero and his comrades in the jungle in a bloody roadside shootout that leaves the soldiers stranded from their base.
“Counterattack,” by the director Chava Cartas, is a deeply masculine action film. Each of the men has an indelible nickname like Combo (David Calderón) or Pollo (Luis Curiel) to go along with their loving moments of banter about dating. During the climactic shootout at a cabin, the extreme close-ups of cartridges jolting erotically through machine guns imbue this sweaty, gory war flick with some angsty, phallic brawn.
‘Ghost Killer’
Rent or buy it on most major platforms.
The agile assassin Hideo Kudo (Masanori Mimoto) spends the beautifully rendered opening of the supernatural film “Ghost Killer,” by the director Kensuke Sonomura, moving with such speed and agility that it’s shocking that he isn’t the protagonist. Just as quickly as we’re introduced to Hideo, he is murdered. Instead, it’s Fumika (Akari Takaishi), a timid waitress who can see Hideo’s ghost, who is our actual hero.
