Firefighters continue to battle the fast-moving Canyon Fire on Friday morning as it burns near the Ventura-Los Angeles County line, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
As of 6:30 a.m., the blaze has charred about 4,856 acres since it erupted Thursday afternoon near Holser Canyon, north of Piru, according to Ventura County Fire. Containment remains at 0%, with more than 400 personnel working overnight in steep terrain and hot, dry conditions.
By late Thursday night, the fire had spread east into Los Angeles County, threatening the communities of Hasley Canyon, Val Verde and Hathaway Ranch. Flames were seen burning dangerously close to homes and a boat storage facility along Hasley Canyon Road.
“It’s pretty devastating. My wife took off with my pets,” one resident told KTLA. “I could feel the warmth from here … you don’t appreciate these firemen as much as you do in person, and how valuable they really are.”
Another evacuee said they were grateful to see their home still standing when checking their security cameras: “Everything’s still there. You can see the firefighters on the front yard — pretty good. But yeah, it’s a huge blessing.”
KTLA’s Erin Myers reported from the scene early Friday that officials have seen video of at least one structure burning, though they have not yet released numbers on homes or buildings damaged or destroyed. There have been no reports of injuries.
