Season 3, Episode 11: ‘Forgot About the Boy’

You would think that Carrie would have felt a twinge of embarrassment at being caught by Lisette walking past her old house like a stalker. But no, Carrie and Lisette say a pleasant hello and embrace, even as Carrie jokes, “I want my place back.”

Is it a joke, though?

Lisette invites Carrie to a party she is hosting the Monday before Thanksgiving, but Carrie later tells Seema she is afraid to go. She thinks seeing her old place might make her sad, which, if you know Carrie, isn’t surprising at all.

That old apartment has seen Carrie through every version of herself — single and coupled, young and not-so-young, struggling and thriving — and twice now, Carrie has given it up for a man. First, she moved into “Heaven on Fifth” when she got engaged to Big, although she was miraculously able to buy it back when that wedding was (originally) called off.

More recently, she sold it to Lisette when her new-old beau Aidan came back into the picture. He refused to set foot inside of it because of lingering trauma from when Carrie cheated on him while living there. To appease that self-centered man, she sold it again and bought the Gramercy palace, where Aidan and his three sons could fit.

That plan didn’t pan out, so she is stuck in a giant house with a beautiful garden all alone.

Is that such a bad thing?

According to Carrie’s publishing house, it is. That scenario mirrors the ending of Carrie’s first novel, which, with the help of Duncan’s notes, is now finished and submitted. But her editor, who thinks the idea of a woman ending up alone is a “romantic tragedy,” wants an epilogue — something a little more uplifting that gives the reader hope.
