Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford was identified as the shooting suspect after five soldiers were wounded at Fort Stewart in Georgia Wednesday, prompting a short lockdown at one of the country’s largest Army bases.
Radford, who is in custody, is 28 years old. He reportedly used his own handgun in the shooting, according to Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division. Radford, a logistics Sergeant, has never been deployed in combat. His motive in the alleged shooting is still unclear.
Lubas said the suspected shooter’s chain of command was unaware he had previously been arrested for driving under the influence, which was widely reported by the media on Wednesday.
“I do believe he was arrested locally for a DUI. That was unknown to his chain of command until the event occurred, and we started looking into law enforcement databases,” Lubas said.
“This morning, shortly before 11:00, an active duty soldier assigned to Fort Stewart, Georgia, shot and wounded five of his fellow soldiers,” said Brig. Gen. John Lubas “Thankfully, all are in stable condition and all are expected to recover.”
Officials also said during a Wednesday afternoon press conference that all five soldiers injured in the shooting are in stable condition. Three of the soldiers required surgery.
