Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has fired several employees who were suspected of stealing trade secrets related to the company’s cutting-edge chip technology, Nikkei Asia reported Monday.
TSMC, which is building out its massive chip production campus in north Phoenix, detected unauthorized activities during routine monitoring, leading to discovery of potential trade secret leaks. Former and current employees allegedly attempted to obtain critical proprietary information for TSMC’s 2-nanometer chip development and production, Nikkei Asia reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
TSMC identified the issue early, took strict disciplinary actions against the personnel involved and initiated legal proceedings, a company spokesperson said in a statement to the Business Journal.
The company is expected to begin mass production of chips using its 2-nanometer process technology in the second half of 2025. The company’s third chip factory, or fab, now under construction at its north Phoenix fab site, is expected to utilize 2-nanometer and A16 process technologies.
