You will never hear hours dedicated to extensive detail about the Philadelphia Eagles‘ longsnappers. Unless Jon Dorenbos enters America’s Got Talent again or Rick Lovato’s family announces they’re expecting a new addition or something, you can forget it. It just isn’t an exciting enough topic.

Long snappers live a life of anonymity. Unless they launch one over the punter’s head and it costs the team a game, rarely will you hear the name of the guy serving that duty on your favorite team.

There’s seemingly no reason to. Don’t believe that? Someone may need to verify this, but if memory serves, Pro Football Focus doesn’t even talk about it. We can’t recall a breakdown of the top long snappers entering an NFL season, and frankly, we wouldn’t be upset if PFF never gave this a deeper discussion.

Here’s what you can guarantee yourselves. If your favorite team employs a bad one, everyone will know quickly. It is an important duty, so much so that every team keeps one on their roster.

Philly has two now. Few mentioned one of the Birds’ recent roster announcements because it involved a long snapper, and again. Look at this as a way to make that right as we near the first preseason game.

Eagles announce the signing of long snapper Christian Johnstone

At the time of this story’s release, we are near ten official training camp practices. The first preseason game comes on Thursday.

Philly signed Charley Hughlett to a one-year deal on March 14. Recently, he has been listed as ‘limited’ in practice as he works his way back from a neck issue.

The Eagles announced the signing of Christian Johnstone, seemingly as a temporary replacement. Defensive back B.J. Mayes was waived to make room.

We’re going to assume this won’t precipitate a back-and-forth battle between two long snappers, but if it does, we regret to inform you that more time will probably be spent covering Kelee Ringo vs. Adoree Jackson, as that seems to be the more interesting conversation piece.

Just in case you’re interested, Johnstone spent five NCAA seasons playing for the Appalachian State Mountaineers before going undrafted in 2025. He was invited to Denver Broncos Rookie Minicamp. Things didn’t work out, but he gets another chance in Philly, though it seems he is here only as a temporary replacement.
