MADISON COUNTY, Ala (WHNT) — On Monday, students loaded up their backpacks and entered the halls at schools in Madison County for the first time this year.

School leaders said the start of a new year brings a special type of excitement.

“To wait and see what these kids are going to do, the accomplishments that they’re going to make, and the growth that they’re going to make over this year…. that’s what’s exciting about the job,” said Superintendent Ken Kubik.

He said safety is a top priority in Madison County schools.

“We have 28 SROs going to be placed throughout the district, so we’re getting more coverage there,” Kubik said.

They’ve also hired 9 different school psychologists to work with elementary students. In addition, they’re implementing mandatory background checks for all volunteers and chaperones.

“We want to make sure that when your child is on a field trip, that they are with people who have been background checked and cleared to make sure that they’re safe at all times,” he said. “So we’re always looking at trying to be proactive, and we’re always trying to be one of the leaders in safety in the state.”

Madison County serves over 20,000 students across 30 different campuses.

“We’re just really excited to see what this group this year, 25-26, is going to generate for accomplishments for the students of Madison County schools,” Kubik said.

He said they are also always prepping for growth. In fact, they just broke ground on the new Hazel Green Middle School last month.

Although in the meantime, they’re ready to see what this school year holds for their teachers and students.
