News Corp. said that it plans to launch the California Post, a Los Angeles-based tabloid with the flavor of the New York Post, early next year.
Robert Thomson, the CEO of News Corp., said, per the Post, “Los Angeles and California surely need a daily dose of The Post as an antidote to the jaundiced, jaded journalism that has sadly proliferated. We are at a pivotal moment for the city and the state, and there is no doubt that The Post will play a crucial role in engaging and enlightening readers, who are starved of serious reporting and puckish wit.”
According to the announcement, the new publication will feature a dedicated staff of reporters and photographers, with the team in New York providing national and international news. The publication will have a print edition and a dedicated home page. Nick Papps will serve as editor in chief. New York Post editor in chief Keith Poole will expand his oversight at New York Post Media Group, which also includes Page Six and the Decider.
The launch of a new publication in Los Angeles comes as its signature daily, the Los Angeles Times, has struggled, with downsizing of staff and revenue losses. Its owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, recently announced plans to take the Times public, with the new entity pursuing Regulation A+ financing, which allows for raising of capital from investors exempt from some of the regulatory requirements of a traditional IPO.
