The New York Mets just dropped a series to the San Francisco Giants in which they allowed 12 runs in the rubber match.
Frankie Montas was responsible for seven of those runs, bringing his season ERA to 6.68. Montas signed with the Mets in the offseason, but started the year on the injured list.
He has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his seven starts. Manager Carlos Mendoza danced around a question postgame regarding Montas’ spot in the rotation, hinting at a change being on the table.
“We just got done with a game here,” Mendoza said in a clip posted to SNY on X. “He’s got to be better. He knows that.”
Mendoza could have easily committed to Montas and ended all discourse about a change, but his failure to do so tells fans that there is a possibility.
Paul Blackburn is currently on a rehab assignment, and Tylor Megill has started facing hitters. Megill could still be a ways out from returning, but he and Blackburn are both potential options for the Mets.
The Mets do not have many options right now to replace Montas, but they could be coming soon. The Mets gave him a two-year, $34 million deal in free agency. His deal has a player option for next season.
After his performance so far, it’s going to be hard for him to find anything better on the open market, so the Mets could end up in a similar situation to the one the New York Yankees were in with Marcus Stroman.
