A mom has left the internet in hysterics after revealing what her cat trained his toddler brother to do—and she caught the mischievous duo red handed.
Despite feeding her cat, named Goose, twice a day, owner Darian Portune, 27, couldn’t understand why there was always food left in his bowl. Goose always acts like he’s starving, and she knew he ate every last bite of his morning and evening meals.
For a while, Portune, of Louisiana, blamed her husband, telling Newsweek she accused him of “feeding the cat too much.” But then reality struck after a few weeks. Portune caught Goose appearing to herd her son, Rivers, towards the cat food to replenish it.
“They play together a lot, so I didn’t think much of it until I heard his food container open,” Portune said. “I didn’t think my husband would believe me, so I started videoing when I noticed Rivers was starting to scoop food. Over the next couple of days, I watched the cat continue to try to herd Rivers to his food area any time his bowl was empty.”
It was clear to Portune that this wasn’t the first time her 20-month-old son had filled the bowl either, given how he “scooped and poured perfectly.” She couldn’t help but laugh after witnessing them in action, especially as it seemed like they both knew exactly what they were doing.
Goose is normally fed in the morning and evening, but he’d been getting a few extra scoops from Rivers around midday.
Portune continued: “Rivers is in a phase of copying every little thing we do, and he’s normally near me when I feed Goose. As for Goose, he acts as though he’s starving if his bowl goes below a certain amount (typical cat behavior). He was basically using the toddler for a midday meal.”
The mom-of-two couldn’t resist sharing the footage on TikTok (@duhhdariann) showing how Goose “trained [his] toddler” to fill his food bowl whenever it was empty. Needless to say, internet users couldn’t get enough of his antics, and the video went viral with more than 542,000 views and over 101,600 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
She never imagined it would generate so much attention, but she loves that the clip portrays the innocence of a toddler trying to help, and the pure, undeniable “cat mischief.” For a long time, Portune and her husband joked about River and Goose being partners in crime, and this just proved their theory.
Since then, Portune has moved the container with the cat food, and Goose is back to two meals a day.
“Whenever my toddlers get into something, Goose is right there helping them. He loved cuddling up to Rivers and his older brother when they were babies. We always joke that they are his babies,” Portune told Newsweek.
In the days since the video was shared on TikTok, it has amassed over 200 comments from social media users who are obsessed with Goose’s teaching methods.
One comment reads: “finally the human kitten is useful.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “I mean kudos to the cat for giving the kid age-appropriate tasks.”
While another person joked: “Your cat and human kitten are adorable co-conspirators!”
