The manufacturer of the first electric flying ferry to come to the U.S. is demonstrating what it calls the “future of transportation technology on the lake” on Lake Tahoe.

Candela, a Swedish company, is demonstrating its C-8 leisure boat through Aug. 6 in partnership with FlyTahoe, the company said in a news release.

“Candela C-8 offers the longest range and highest cruising speed among all electric boats in serial production,” the company said. “The true magic of the hydrofoils appears after takeoff. Glide effortlessly above the chop while focusing on your passengers instead of tackling waves, and enjoying the sounds of nature instead of roaring engines. Travel far on pure electricity and arrive refreshed.”

It’s the same technology that’s being utilized on Candela’s P-12 ferry, which will transport up to 30 people north and south across the lake, with room for gear like bikes and skis, too.

“The FlyTahoe ferry will connect the northern and southern parts of the lake in under 30 minutes, while driving around the lake often takes over two hours in the winter,” the company said. “FlyTahoe will create a vital link to the 14 world-class ski resorts encircling the lake, making it an ideal option for tourists and locals alike.”

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the ferry could be operational on Lake Tahoe by 2026.
