BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – More than $300,000 in drugs has been taken off the streets, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. This drug bust is part of an ongoing long-term investigation by JCSO.

“This is one of the largest that we’ve seen in recent memory,” said Jefferson County Public Information Officer Henry Irby.

One man has been arrested in connection to the drug bust. JCSO arrested Marcus Allen Harper, 41, and charged him with drug trafficking. He’s being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

“If you could look and see what the investigation brought in, [Harper] is pretty much on a high level of drug trafficking,” said Sheriff Mark Pettway. “I think all of this together had a street value of $1.4 million.”

Drugs, guns and money are what made up that total street value. Deputies seized $336,753 cash, along with seven different kinds of narcotics, four semi-automatic guns and other drug-related items. Some of the drugs found include 32 pounds of cocaine, 232 grams of meth, 50 grams of crack cocaine and 488 grams of marijuana.

“Right now, we will send the drugs to the lab to be tested, and once the drugs have been tested in the lab, we’ll know at that point if they’ve been laced with anything,” Pettway said.

Pettway says this bust shows that with teamwork, illegal operations can be dismantled to keep the community safe.

“My number one priority is to keep the citizens of Jefferson County safe. Drug seizures such as this help to further our mission,” he said. “I would like to also recognize the citizens of Jefferson County. We would not be as nearly as effective in our crime fighting efforts without help.”

If you have any information about this case, you’re asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-325-1450. You can also call crime stoppers anonymously at 205-254-7777.
