Brian Cashman Offers Simple Reason He Thinks Yankees’ Deadline Was Success

The New York Yankees came into the trade deadline with a few big issues to address on the roster.

They needed to add a third baseman because the hot corner had been a massive void for the Yankees, both on offense and defense. The Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario, presumably for a platoon at the hot corner.

The Yankees needed to address the bullpen, too. General manager Brian Cashman opted to swing deals for Camilo Doval, David Bednar and Jake Bird to bolster the high-leverage situations for the Bronx Bombers.

They needed to add to the starting rotation, but New York didn’t make any additions there.

Still, Cashman seems to believe the deadline was a success.

“I know we’re better today than we were yesterday, so mission accomplished there,” Cashman said shortly after the deadline passed on Thursday, per MLB’s Bryan Hoch.

Is Cashman correct?

The Yankees upgraded at third base in a big way. McMahon might not be a superstar, but he’s a great defender and hits well enough to be unproblematic in the lineup. Rosario provides utility depth all across the field.

The biggest upgrade the Yankees made was to the bullpen. Adding Bednar and Doval gives manager Aaron Boone a pair of closer-caliber arms to pitch in the seventh, eighth, or ninth inning. Bird gives the Yankees another upgrade.

While they didn’t address the hole in the starting rotation, the Yankees got a lot better at the deadline. Pair that with the imminent return of starting pitcher Luis Gil and this trade deadline should be considered a resounding success for the Bronx Bombers.
