Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan’s cause of death has been revealed nearly a week after his passing.
Hogan, whose real name is Terry Gene Bollea, died of acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack.
The New York Post was the first to confirm the cause of death. Sources also confirmed this to PEOPLE Magazine.
“A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is severely reduced or blocked. The blockage is usually due to a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances in the heart (coronary) arteries,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
The Post’s Page Six obtained documents from the Pinellas County Forensic Science Center cremation summary approval report. It revealed that Hogan had a history of atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm, the Mayo Clinic explained.
The health records also showed that Hogan had a history of leukemia CLL, which was widely unknown until now.
“Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one of the most common types of leukemia in adults,” according to the American Cancer Society. “It’s a type of cancer that starts in early forms of certain white blood cells (called lymphocytes) in the bone marrow. The cancer (leukemia) cells start in the bone marrow but then go into the blood.”
On July 24, police told KTLA sister station WFLA in Tampa, Florida, that officers were called to the home where Hogan suffered a cardiac arrest just before 10 a.m. He was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 71 years old.
