A homicide suspect was arrested after an hours-long standoff with police and SWAT team members in Santa Ana.

The suspect was identified as Jerry Lopez, 48, of Santa Ana, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

Lopez was arrested in connection with a June 14 incident when police responded to a shooting near 1100 S. Townsend Street around 7:48 a.m.

Officers arriving at the scene located the victim, Christopher Michael Abarca, 23, of Santa Ana, sitting in the driver’s seat of his car, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Paramedics transported him to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. The shooter had fled the scene before police arrived.

Following an investigation, authorities identified Lopez as the primary suspect in Abarca’s murder.

On July 30, SWAT team members served a search warrant at Lopez’s home near McFadden Avenue and Clara Street, however, he refused to comply.

Following an hours-long standoff and negotiation, Lopez surrendered and was taken into custody. Multiple firearms were discovered inside his residence, and he was arrested and booked into the Santa Ana Jail.

No further details, including a motive or how the suspect and victim were known to each other, were released.
