HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — At least three people were injured after a wreck involving a dump truck in South Huntsville, according to HEMSI.

Don Webster with HEMSI told News 19 that the crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. at the Target on Carl T. Jones Drive. He said that at least one person was taken to Huntsville Hospital Trauma Services.

The Huntville Police Department said the dump truck was traveling down Ledges Drive when it reportedly experienced a brake failure. HPD said, unable to stop, the vehicle continued through the intersection at Carl T. Jones Drive and struck a car that was stopped at the traffic light.

HPD said the driver of that other vehicle wasn’t injured, but the car was significantly damaged.

Police said the truck then continued until it hit the South Huntsville Target store, injuring the passenger and trapping the driver. The passenger’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Emergency teams with the Huntsville Fire and Rescue and Madison County Rescue Squad worked for a couple of hours to get the driver out of the dump truck, eventually able to pull him out of the truck.

While crews were attempting to tow the truck out of the building, News 19 crews on scene saw an awning that was sitting on top of the truck collapse. There is also a large hole visible in the brick wall outside.

HPD said the crash is under investigation.

“Currently, there is no indication that a crime has occurred,” HPD said. “However, due to the severity of the accident, a member of our Traffic Homicide Unit has been called in to assist and take the lead on the investigation.”

News 19 crews are at the scene and are working to provide updates as they come.
