Democratic congressional campaigns are running hard-hitting ads accusing Washington of corruption this election cycle — but a review of battleground spots shows many of them share one conspicuous omission.
While Democrats in Washington insist they have no intention of backing off planned investigations into Donald Trump’s administration if they retake the House or Senate, their television advertisements in swing states are hammering “corruption” and a “broken” or “rigged” Washington — without singling out the president as the culprit, reported MS NOW.
In New Hampshire’s Senate race, an ad backing Chris Pappas mentions “Donald Trump’s corruption” once before pivoting entirely to banning congressional stock trading and barring lawmakers-turned-lobbyists.
Ads for Democratic House candidates in three competitive Pennsylvania districts — Bob Brooks, Janel Stelson and Paige Cognetti — attack a “corrupt political system” and “corrupt politicians” without invoking the president at all.
The same pattern shows up in Iowa’s 1st District, where Christina Bohannan pledges to “clean up Washington” through stock-trading bans and travel restrictions.
Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett told MS NOW the approach is deliberate, calibrated to each district’s political lean.
“They don’t want to look kind of like overt partisans, just framing this issue around Trump,” Hackett told MS NOW. “In a Trump plus-15, Trump plus-20 district that may look like taking on corruption across the board. In a plus-one seat, that may just look like taking on Trump directly and calling out his corruption specifically.”
A Navigator Research survey found 81 percent of registered voters blame “corruption in government” for their rising personal costs, giving Democrats an incentive to fuse anti-corruption messaging with affordability arguments rather than framing it purely as anti-Trump politics.
Not every candidate is following the script — Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff has leaned directly into attacking Trump’s inner circle, branding it the “Mar-a-Lago mafia.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his advisers say the party is planning a “dual track strategy” for 2027 — aggressive oversight hearings targeting the administration paired with a separate affordability push — suggesting Trump-focused accountability efforts, muted now, would resurface immediately if Democrats win the majority.
“Democrats are going to rain hell on the administration with an accountability agenda, so you’ll see a number of public hearings and investigations,” said one Jeffries adviser. “You’ll also see on the other side a real affordability agenda, where Democrats are actively trying to find ways, for instance, to fix the broken health care system.”
