Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys are at a standstill. Both sides want to get a new deal done, but actually having that scenario come to life has been difficult at this point in the offseason.

With nearly one week of training camp in the bag, the situation hasn’t changed. In fact, it might’ve gotten worse since the start of camp.

“I would say right now we’re nowhere on that deal,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday. “We are further away from a deal in late July, early August than we were in late March, early April. The two sides have gone backwards, not forward.”

Since Jerry Jone held his pre-camp media availability, the situation out in Oxnard, California, has become awkward. Parsons hasn’t grown disgruntled to the point where he packed up his belongings and left, but he doesn’t seem to be making progress on a new deal. That isn’t due to the fact that the Cowboys aren’t willing to talk shop out West. After all, they just recently extended their starting tight end, Jake Ferguson.

“I don’t think they are speaking much these days if speaking at all,” Schefter added.

“There was communication in late March, early April, where Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons were sitting down and discussing a deal, making progress, and tracking towards getting that deal done. This negotiation, when it was a negotiation, has gone sideways. It’s not a negotiation right now. There is really no conversation about getting a deal done.”

The situation is alarming for Parsons’ side, for sure. As the veteran edge rusher remains under contract for next season, Jones expects him to suit up and play with or without an extension in the mix. The good news is that negotiations can pick back up quickly. Also, the Cowboys have a history of waiting to get major deals done.

“That could change next week. It could change shortly before the season. We’ve seen how long Dallas sometimes waits on some of these deals,” Schefter added.

However, the NFL Insider suggested that this situation doesn’t feel like it can be compared to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb’s previous negotiations.

“This sounds different to me,” Schefter said. “This sounds a little bit more personal from both sides. It sounds like Dallas is upset with the fact that it felt like it was getting closer to a deal and then that deal went sideways. I think Micah Parsons feels like this deal should’ve been done. I don’t think Micah is real happy with them. I don’t think they are real happy with him. I don’t think anybody is real happy with anybody. I don’t think there’s a deal being discussed right now.”

The Cowboys have made it clear they want Parsons around long-term. Parsons has verbally and physically shown that he’s committed to Dallas by showing up and consistently mentioning his desire to stick with the organization for the long haul.

Maybe the situation will work itself out soon. If not, the Cowboys have some tough decisions to make.
