Bears HC Ben Johnson Speaks Out Amid Concerns With Offense

There are always going to be growing pains in terms of a new head coach coming to a team. That is especially true when the new head coach is a former offensive coordinator.

That appears to be the case for new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson. Johnson not only has to lead the Bears, but he also has to lead Caleb Williams into a very important second year.

During the first padded practice for the Bears, Williams was not throwing the ball downfield much. While it is only training camp, Johnson understands that the team still has some issues to iron out.

Instead of also speaking on the potential frustrations, Johnson turned that into a more positive note when speaking to reporters.

“We’re not frustrated at all,” Johnson told reporters over the weekend. “We’re right where we need to be. In fact, I told the unit last (week) to see where they came from in the springtime to where we’ve been.”

The issue is that Johnson also stated that the Bears’ offense only knows a third of the playbook right now. Again, it is only training camp, but the league is weeks away from preseason starting.

Williams had a strong rookie season, despite being under a shaky offensive line. He put together a campaign of 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Williams’ stats prove that he had a strong first season, but there is even more pressure on him to succeed in year two. He was named the starter before the season even began, but showcased why he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2024.

The issue is Williams will now have to learn his second offense in the matter of two years under a new head coach and offensive coordinator.

Johnson brought in Declan Doyle to serve as the team’s new offensive coordinator, and he was previously the tight ends coach for the Denver Broncos. Doyle and Johnson will work in tandem to create a new dynamic offense for the Bears, which the entire offense will need to learn.

Williams is going to need some time to get acclimated to the new way of doing things under Johnson, so the frustration should not be at the highest level right now. However, should the Bears team not be clicking by the time preseason is in full swing, Chicago could be in some trouble.
