A family cleaning out a deceased relative’s home brought a box of what they believed were military ordnances to an LAPD station in Pacoima on Saturday afternoon, prompting a bomb squad response and a joint investigation with the U.S. military.
The incident began around 2:30 p.m. at LAPD’s Foothill Station on Osborne Street, where two individuals arrived with a plastic container of items they had found and turned them over to officers, according to LAPD Public Information Officer updates.
Officers inspected the container and discovered several items believed to be military ordnances. The department’s Bomb Squad responded and used a robot to capture images of the devices.
Because the items appeared to be military-grade, LAPD collaborated with explosive ordnance disposal experts from the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. Officials determined the items were safe to move, and the LAPD Bomb Squad packaged them for transport to a secure storage site. The U.S. military is expected to collect them at a later date.
LAPD emphasized that the devices were not brought into the station lobby and remained inside the individuals’ vehicle during the response. No injuries or evacuations were reported.
Earlier in the day, LAPD Media Relations confirmed the call came in at 2:32 p.m. regarding a suspicious item, and bomb squad personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Police activity prompted temporary transit disruptions in the area. LADOT Transit said DASH Pacoima buses were rerouted in both directions, with service suspended at several stops along Osborne Street between San Fernando Road and Telfair Avenue.
The incident comes a week after a deadly explosion involving military-style grenades killed three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies during a training exercise in East L.A. on July 18. That blast involved ordnance recovered from a Santa Monica storage unit and has since led to an ongoing investigation by federal and local agencies.
The fallen deputies served a combined 74 years with the department. Among the three of them, they leave behind 16 children, along with devastated friends and family members.
Authorities have made no connection between the two incidents, but both highlight recent encounters with military-grade devices being discovered in non-military settings.
The individuals who turned in the items Saturday were not considered suspects.
