The Chargers signed stand out All-Pro offensive tackle Rashawn Slater to a contract extension that makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

Slater’s deal is worth $114 million over four years, according to information obtained by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

While the Chargers didn’t immediately confirm the terms of the deal in their official statement on Slater’s new contract, they did praise the Northwestern alum, 26, for helping star quarterback Justin Herbert set numerous passing records and keeping him healthy for the team’s playoff appearance.

“In 2024, he started 16 games including the postseason, helping keep Herbert upright for the offense to commit just eight turnovers, setting a franchise record and tying for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history,” the Chargers’ statement reads. “As a rookie in 2021, Slater started all 16 appearances at left tackle, earning second-team All-Pro status after leading a front that protected for the No. 4-ranked total offense in the NFL (390.2 yards per game), as Herbert threw for an AFC-best 32 passing touchdowns. Slater was also named the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl becoming the first rookie tackle to be named an all-star since 2012.”

The Chargers are set to kick off the NFL season officially on Thursday when they play the Detroit Lions in Canton, Ohio, which is the home of the NFL Hall of Fame, in the first preseason game of the 2025-2026 campaign.

The team’s first game for the upcoming regular season, against the Kansas City Chiefs, takes place on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as part of the NFL International Series.
