The Miami Marlins have been connected to more than a handful of trade rumors this year. Most of the rumors have revolved around the team’s ace, Sandy Alcántara, but there have been some interesting wrinkles in his trade sweepstakes.
Alcántara has struggled this year as he’s recovered from Tommy John surgery. But the Marlins continue to hold him with the intention of landing a haul of prospects in return.
The Marlins have also seen their young stars Kyle Stowers and Edward Cabrera mixed into some trade rumors, but Alcántara remains the big fish on the market.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported that the trade interest in Alcántara was growing as the trade deadline approached. This could result in a blockbuster deal in the coming days.
“Trade interest in Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara has soared since his last start with teams now convinced he will be moved by the July 31 deadline,” Nightengale wrote.
With this report, teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs are likely top suitors.
The Dodgers need to acquire a starting pitcher to help manage their injury-riddled rotation. Acquiring Alcántara would be expensive, but it would help the Dodgers for the next few years. Los Angeles also has the prospect capital to make a deal happen.
The Cubs need pitching as badly as any team in baseball, and they’ve been closely connected to Alcántara for months now. Chicago would benefit from adding an ace with team control, and the Marlins pitcher fits that.
The Marlins should be looking to trade Alcántara this week. With the interest seemingly growing by the day, it seems like a deal is imminent.
