SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — A man who led law enforcement agencies on a nearly 20-hour-long manhunt in Scottsboro has been charged with attempted murder.
Daniel McCarn has been charged with attempted murder, according to Jackson County Jail records. Court records do not show when he is set to appear in court.
McCarn led officers on a multi-agency manhunt Saturday in Scottsboro.
Around 12:49 a.m. Saturday, the Scottsboro Police Department said it responded to a domestic incident on Ruth Street. When officers arrived, the department said McCarn drove off in a vehicle and started a police chase.
The chase ultimately ended in a crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 72 and County Park Road.
The department said McCarn left the vehicle and began shooting at officers, and hit an SPD officer. He then ran away, and around 2:57 a.m., SPD said it was a multi-agency manhunt to find McCarn.
Below are pictures taken from News 19 crews on the scene throughout the manhunt.
The officer was taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment. The department said the officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
SPD said that heat during the day was a big obstacle in its search, as it made getting drones up for thermal aerial images difficult.
The department added that a family member of McCarn was the one who initially called SPD, which led to the incident. McCarn has no past criminal history prior to the manhunt.
A statewide Blue Alert was issued by ALEA around 12:15 p.m., giving the public a description of McCarn as well as saying he was considered armed and dangerous.
Around 9:56 p.m., the department got a call from a business owner in the 2000 block of Old Larkinsville Road. The business owner reported seeing a male subject on their security camera matching the description of McCarn.
When officers approached the subject, they identified the subject as McCarn and took him into custody without incident.
The following agencies helped in the manhunt for McCarn:
- Jackson County Sheriff’s Office
- Madison County Sheriff’s Office
- Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office
- Marshall County Joint Special Response Team (Multi-Agency)
- Alabama Law Enforcement Agency
- Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
- Huntsville Police Department
- ATF
- FBI
- SBI
- U.S. Marshalls
- Scottsboro Fire Department
- Highlands Ambulance Service
In addition to the help from law enforcement, SPD said several businesses and citizens helped all agencies with food, drinks, running errands and offering words of support.
“[We] would like to thank you for keeping our officer, our agency, and our mission in mind!”
There is no word on whether McCarn will be given any additional charges.
