The Cleveland Guardians have struggled tremendously this year. As a result, the Guardians are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Cleveland has been mixed in a lot of rumors over the last few months, mainly stemming from pitchers in the bullpen. Outfielder Steven Kwan found himself mixed in some trade rumors, but the Guardians have seemingly shut that idea down, likely opting to hold onto Kwan.
But what will Cleveland do with the rest of the roster?
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported the Guardians have seemingly made their trade decision regarding two pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Cade Smith, a few days before the trade deadline.
“The Cleveland Guardians have no interest in trading reliever Cade Smith and would have to be overwhelmed by an offer to move closer Emmanuel Clase,” Nightengale wrote.
Since the beginning, it’s seemed quite unlikely the Guardians would look to trade either of these talented relievers. They’re both under team control beyond this season, and the Guardians aren’t an uncompetitive team.
If Cleveland is going to right the ship heading into next season, having Smith and Clase on the roster is going to be a key reason why it would be able to succeed. Trading these stars for prospects in order to build for the future doesn’t make any sense.
That just means the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and all the other reliever-needy contenders will have to turn elsewhere to find the bullpen help they need.
