Joaquin Nieman Reveals Open Reason For Axing Caddie, Coach

It looks like Joaquin Niemann has finally hit rock bottom in terms of his major championship results. At the highest level of professional golf, the Chilean has only one top-10 finish in 26 starts, missing the cut eight times.

In fact, in his two most recent major starts (US Open, Open Championship), he missed the cut.

This contrasts with the tremendous success Niemann has had at LIV Golf over the past two seasons. Last year, he won two tournaments, and now how he has a chance for his fifth LIV victory of 2025, bringing a commanding six-shot lead into Sunday.

Clearly, something isn’t working with his performance at the majors, and Niemann is determined to fix it. His decisions were drastic: changing caddies and coaches in one fell swoop.

“I’d say it’s been a little weird the last two, three weeks,” he said from the venue of the LIV Golf UK, according to the transcripts of his post-second round performance.

“I was pretty frustrated at the beginning of this week after a bad result, obviously, at The Open as well and all the rest kind of going on. I feel like — not low, but I wasn’t — like going on the golf course going into this week, I wasn’t feeling that confident at all.”

As is usually the case, Niemann expressed his gratitude for the work his former caddie and coach had done alongside him for several years.

“I’m really grateful for them, for the two people that are not working with me anymore on the team but it’s part of it.”

Niemann’s former caddie, Gary Matthews, had been with him since the 2020 US Open, accompanying him for one of his two PGA Tour victories (the 2022 Genesis Invitational), all six of his LIV Golf victories, and his only top-10 finish in major championships (the 2025 PGA Championship, T8).

Niemann replaced Matthews with his good friend Diego Salinas, a professional player on the Chilean Golf Tour.

As for his former coach, Eduardo Miquel, he had worked with Niemann since he began his professional career in 2018.
