This week, the passing of WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan shocked the wrestling world. Hogan has spent over five decades in the wrestling business, which inadvertently launched his acting career. As a pioneer of sports entertainment, Hogan is one of the most widely recognized faces and names in the squared circle.
Years back, Netflix was looking to capitalize on the wrestling wave following the success of Heels and The Iron Claw. A film about Hogan was in the works, with Chris Hemsworth set to revive the Hulkamania craze. Due to unforeseen circumstances, it fizzled out. However, it seems Netflix hasn’t given up on producing content about the polarizing figure.
Hulk Hogan Docuseries quietly in the works at Netflix
Netflix is reportedly working on a docuseries about Hogan that features hours of new footage of him and others, including interviews. According to Puck, Bryan Storkel is directing in collaboration with WWE. Due to Hogan’s passing, it’s unclear when the docuseries will release, if at all. Hogan has a complicated relationship with wrestling fans due to past racial comments, leading to WWE cutting ties with him.
In January, he appeared on the WWE Raw debut on Netflix to promote his Real American Beer. The fans in Los Angeles didn’t hold back, and the booing became the story of the night, above all else. Still, he’s a beloved member of the WWE family, and on WWE SmackDown tonight, the show opened with a tribute and 10-bell salute. WWE Legends, the SmackDown roster, as well as Triple H, paid respects on stage.
Outside of the Hogan docuseries, Netflix and WWE are working to produce more original content. WWE: Unreal, releasing on July 29th, gives viewers a look into the WWE writers’ room and how stories go from script to screen. Of course, there was also the Mr. McMahon series that launched earlier this year, highlighting the wrongdoings of former WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon.
