A new report claims Star Wars Outlaws had a sequel in development, but it was recently canceled. According to the leak, Ubisoft decided to scrap the project after the Star Wars RPG flopped in sales.

Star Wars Outlaws Sequel Canceled (Allegedly)

Back in 2024, Star Wars Outlaws managed to sell 1 million copies in its initial launch window. However, given the game’s massive budget, that wasn’t nearly enough. It was, by all measures, a major flop for the studio.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot even recently addressed the RPG’s poor sales in an interview with IGN. The executive blamed its failure on the Star Wars brand not being in a good place: “Outlaws was released at a time when the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters.”

According to a recent report, Ubisoft was initially planning to make a Star Wars Outlaws sequel, but recently canceled it.

The information comes from Tom Henderson during the July 24 episode of the Insider Gaming Podcast. The prolific journalist claims that Ubisoft decided to back out of the project. Although Henderson also clarified that the game wasn’t actually in development, but still in early pre-production.

“[Ubisoft] also recently canceled Star Wars Outlaws 2, because that was planned and in the works,” Henderson explained. “It wasn’t set in stone or in full production; it was very, very early. They looked at Outlaws 2 and thought, ‘Let’s not do that.’”

This, of course, isn’t too surprising, given that Star Wars Outlaws struggled to connect with fans. And with Guillemot recently acknowledging its lackluster retail performance, Henderson’s scoop on the situation lines up. However, I can’t help but feel disappointed by the news.

Outlaws Deserved Better

Star Wars Outlaws always had a divisive effect on players, but it’s not really a mystery why. One of the game’s biggest problems was its forced Stealth Sections, which just weren’t very fun. Ubisoft would eventually release a patch months after launch that removed these levels. But this was too little, too late for many fans who had already written it off.

It’s just a shame because the latest updates completely overhauled the RPG. And with the release of Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune DLC, it really has become a fantastic title. But like Sony’s similarly doomed Days Gone, it’s a title whose launch was mishandled from the start. I feel like more than ever before in the industry, first impressions are everything, and because of its rocky debut, Outlaws continues to have stink all over it.

I’m probably just yelling into the void on this one, but I really think Star Wars Outlaws is worth checking out if you’re in the market for an RPG. As a Star Wars fan, it’s also one of the best games when it comes to truly nailing the series’ lore and world.

Sadly, it looks like any hopes for a sequel are pretty much doomed at this point. But I wouldn’t be too surprised if Outlaws ends up becoming a niche favorite among the fandom years from now.
